Face Over 50
Aging has its own wonderful beauty. We are confident in ourselves and know exactly who We are the epitome of “been there, done that”. But that does not mean we have to stop looking our best. That we must stop showing up and showing out. Looking good is not limited to tweens, teens, 20- and -30 somethings. Shoot we’re beautiful too! Like fine wine, we get better with time. And finding the right makeup is key to looking our best.
I love to play in my makeup and try new things. I love playing up my eyes; wearing new colors and seeing how they work with my complexion. I know some of the current trends just do not work for me because, let’s face it, women over 50 are not the demographic that many brands are catering to. So that begs the question: What kind of makeup looks good on 50+ women?
Remember when we used to wear makeup to look older? We used to wear our makeup heavy so that we could get in the club or buy alcohol. Well, those days are long gone. We should adjust our style, not to look younger, but to de-emphasize the areas we don’t want to draw attention to. Here are my tips to help:
- Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! As we get older our skin becomes drier and we must keep it hydrated. Anything with retinol, vitamin E and C will help you keep in reducing the signs of aging. I say invest in your skin care…you cannot go wrong.
- Primer is key. Using the right primer as a base before applying your foundation will help in making sure your foundation does not “slip”. It can smooth lines, wrinkles, and other blemishes that you want to control and conceal.
- Do not go overboard with foundation. We tend to think that the more foundation the better. Wrong. Using more foundation than necessary can make it worse. It can creep into those fine lines and wrinkles and make you look older. Find a foundation that blends perfectly with your skin tone. Are you cool, warm or neutral? Oily, dry or combo? Once you know the answers to those question, go from there and use it only to even out your skin.
- Conceal. Find the right concealer based on your skin type and tone. You should go one to two shades lighter than your foundation. Do not do the severe triangle under the eye. This will only sit in those creases that you are trying to hide. Instead, apply it to the darkest parts of the under-eye area and the outer corners. This will lift the area and give you a brighter, youthful look.
- Skip the pencil liner. As you get older, the skin around the eyes gets thinner and more wrinkled. Having to hold the eye and drag a pencil across only emphasizes it. I suggest using an angled brush, setting spray and eyeshadow as a liner. I believe it makes it easier and it allows you to smudge without making a mess.
Wearing makeup is a way of self-expression and makes you feel good. It allows us to step with our best foot forward with confidence and a statement. Bottom line: drink plenty of water, take care of your skin and live your best life.
